2-16-15: Sharing my experience as I change my health behaviors

Good Evening, today my friend @LynetteS and I went to #GenghisGrillAd, #healthKwest, and #hearthealthy.  My challenge was to make a bowl from the selection of recipes that were provided.  I chose the called the Mongolian Turkey, at which time the restaurant did not have turkey and I substituted with chicken.  This was an excellent recipes and the sauce was combined with the veggies was delicious; needless to say I finished the bowl I was looking for more……

Personal Note:  My day started with a physical workout with my exercise coach @lynetteS and she was able to get a educated physical-trainer named Krissy.  She is educating us how to workout the correct way using the right weights and position for individuals who are within our age group.  To be truthful since I hurt my lower-back when I was 26 it was scary to think about working on weights again.
Here is my history with weight training, I was doing a heavy weight workout with little or no instructions; encouraged by others to do these types exercise.  I said my lower back was hurting but was told I was a wiener and keep working out; needless to say a few days later I threw my back out causing a bulging disc.  I never went back to lifting weights until now. What I am now discovering if you do it the right way there would be a gain in muscle burn and not lower aches.  Krissy has us using weights, she uses her knowledge of correct body mechanics.  I feeling I will be okay working out with her experiences.

Chicken before the veggies, I carried my recipe sheet with me..
Yes I am an educated person and just because I have healthcare knowledge does not always mean I practice the knowledge I know.  It a lot easier to tell someone else they should have healthy behaviors.  Well it is time I start practicing what I teach and become healthy in my eating and exercise habits.  As well as educating my children.

The recipe sheet and the recipe bowl. Does that not look good? I know I really enjoyed it..
You ask what makes this different.  I call it self-realization and if I want to be around a while I need to take better care of what life I have left.  I am getting older, my husband is getting older, and my children are growing into their teenager.  I want to be around to get even older and watch my children grow older.
Related to this change and/or concept is for me to work on my planning and putting this plan into action.  Part of my action is organization.  I have great organization skills but seemed to be overwhelmed. To begin with organizing I have to start a planing my meals, plan when to exercise, and when to work on my self-esteem.  I need to believe in myself; this is another story I will address later in my blogging.
Most people who know me would think I have good self-esteem but that is not true, over the years I have fought for it but it has been rob from me time and time again by others. Through these years, I continued to fight for my esteem, why do you ask why I fight, it was my parents who raised a fighter… I realized that my low self esteem still needs to have health changes.
Furthermore, I realized long ago obesity is like  an addiction, it is like someone who is addicted to smoking, drugs, or alcohol.  The differences between these types of addicting behaviors from overeating is…   you can survive without the other behaviors but you can not live without food.  So then you ask how do you give up an  food addiction? Or change an food addiction?
The bottom line is a food-addict needs to learn to make correct choices and partake in exercise to keep the addiction at bay.

2-15-15: Today’s Challenge: Now We’re Grillin!

Today’s Challenge: Now We’re Grillin!

The #GenghisGrillAd and #healthKwest have added another challenge today.  I am excited about this doing this; the challenged is called:

Now We’re Grillin!
Grill your own bowl. Take a photo of you grilling your bowl and then I am suppose to post.
We spent a little bit outside the restaurant enjoying the sun, this fine Sunday morning

Well today we went to the restaurant right at 11 am.  Today was my husband’s first trip to the restaurant with me, so we were sharing a moment.  There I was greeted by fantastic friends, who are just a few of my supporters in this challenge.  We took a terrific group photo.
At #GenghisGrillAd and #Healthkwest
in front of the store Genghis Grill in Las Cruces, New Mexico
After this we went into the restaurant and were provided with a fantastic waitress who took our orders.  We went to the line and were able to select from a wide variety of meats, veggies, and sauces.  It all so yummy and hard to make a decision, you would never get tired of the varieties ways a bowl can be created.  It is a special moment to create your own bowl
After I created the bowl, I was able to step into the world of cooking my food on the grill behind. Already there were several orders cooking on there.  The manager explained how to put oil first, then my bowl, and how to turn the food using both sticks.  You definitely need to be ambidextrous when working with both sticks.  The grill was incredibly hot but I did not mind it because I was getting a good lesson into how to cook my food and how other individuals have there food cooked.  This was quite an experience I wont soon forget…

This is Conni (me) with the Manager educating me how to grill my food..
What I said earlier about being an introverted person is definitely true.  This was a hard task for me.  I really had to step out of my comfort zone.  Not only was I supposed to take a picture of me grilling my food, but I was also supposed to post and share it with my friends and family.  Most of the time I tell them I am doing well because I do not like special attention focused on me.  I have found if you like to be in the lime light is a lot of pressure and expectations. So my story or feelings is bring out a lot of emotions. Although writing about this has allowed me to process ways to finding a better way to be healthy, lose weight, developing a work out plan. I am finding that this is a complex process but it is workable.
Most of the us are educated people and learn our information from speakers, news, or reading journals.  We know what to do about being healthy and making good choices.  But really do we?  Do we put this knowledge to good use?  Do we just say one more day and eat the food that is not good for us.
Well my”one more day”as come and I realized that I can not keep up the pace of eating and being a couch sloth any longer. For me this makes a realization and a  important step moving towards a goal of being healthy. Healthy means spending more quality time with my kids, husband, taking less medication as I age to compensation for my obesity.

IMG_1741 Personal note:  I am not much of a cook and spend most of my time buying meals from fast food places and ordering out.  I have taught my children a bad eating habits  My plan is to change my habits and with this watch them change theirs.  By having the opportunity to go the Genghis Grill and choose from a wide variety of selections and provided with health tips I am positive I will be successful, not only with me but with demonstrating to my children the importance of staying healthy and make good choices.

Today's Challenge-stating my goals

Today challenge is an easy challenge but in other ways it is almost complex.  I have been asked to list the top 3 goals I want to achieve in my #HealthKwest and #GenghisGrillAd.  My goals are important to me and the success of the goals are what keeps me going on the 60 + life long journey.  Here are my goals!

Goals:
1) I want to become a healthier person
2) I want to learn to make healthy choices in my selections with my eating habits.
3)I want to have fun participating, eating healthy combination of food, and meeting new people.

I am exciting I have been able to succeed at this challenge for six days and counting. My plan is to succeed for 60 days and then every day after that.............  There comes a point when you reach your point.  I have reached my point.  It is not about the diet, exercise, or even eating healthy selections.  It is about finding your inner self, also realizing that you are your vessel and you need to take care of it. There a lot of things that are coming about that need to change and that is where it needs to start.

Today is valentine day, I spent the morning with good friend Jean, her children, and her siblings.  I also spend time some great time with my own children: dominic and cecilia.  We walked the streets of the Las Cruces Farmer Markets, looking at crafts, smelling the sweet smell coming from the food trucks, and visiting with friends I have not seen in a while. I did about 7k steps.

Then we went to a Mexican restaurant with more friends, we sat in the patio area and enjoyed each other company.  I want to you to know this is my favorite Mexican food restaurant.  It has a wonderful salsa bar and endless chips.  Not to say the sweet aroma's of chili too.  I kept thinking about my goals and what is important to me.  It was not eating this food; I realized that I was at my weakness.  I did it!  I did it!  I did not go to the salsa bar, eat chips or ate my favorite fried food.  I ate a salad, no dressing, and grill chicken.  I was satisfied, even after watching my friends and family have other selections.

At five we went to #GenhisGrillAd and had a great bowl with scallops, veggies, and napa cabbage. The photo you see above is from the restaurant....

You ask where is my spouse and why did we not spend the time together?  He was at work and had to be available for 24 hours.  Mostly likely I will not see him until tomorrow.  I do missing spending our time.

Day 5:  Yesterday, on my 60 day challenge we were asked a question to answer Here is my question from Genghis Grill:

1) ‪#‎HealthKwest‬ trivia time! Which ingredient listed below is a good source of Vitamin B12?
             A) Mandarin Orange
             B) Jalapenos
             C) Scallops
             D) Tomatoes
Here is my answer: The great news is that the answer is C (Scallops) a serving of scallops not only are very high in vitamin B-12 but also provide 17% of your daily iron requirement and 12% of your daily calcium requirement. This is a big deal when you goal is to get and stay healthy. Iron oxygenates your blood, calcium strengthen bones and teeth among other things. B-12 is an essential nutrient and proper intake is vital to good health, since it is required to maintain red blood cells and healthy nerve cells. With that in mind, this Valentine my husband Adam and I plan to add scallops to our bowls. #Healthkwest and ‪#‎GenghisGrillAD‬ ‪#‎candelucero‬

Day 5: photo - at the restaurant with my coach, mentor, and friend. We enjoyed a excellent bowl of chicken and veggies and the staff was excellent and helpful.
Day 5:  We find challenges, are a way to experience our behaviors and habits. The hardest challenge for me is to open up and write about my challenges, to share my experiences and share who them with the world, my family, and friends.  I am trying my best to be a good person and write what I am feeling, how I want to change, and how I am exercising.  I walked over 10000 steps yesterday, ate healthy, and spent time with family.  By the early evening my stomach was upset and I was exhausted for personal reason.  The personal reason for my exhaustion was I lacked sleep and we celebrated the life a dear friend.  This friend was like a brother-in-law to me, he wife my sister.  He was loved my his family and friends.

We ate at Genghis Grill and the food was terrific!!!!  My Kwest quest was to eat and check in on Facebook but I did it wrong so I will be back there doing the task again.  That is okay, I guess I am enjoying the venture... Not only an adventure I am meeting new people everyday, even though I am still shy about this but I am giving it by best.

Day 4: Started out with a two mile walk on NMSU campus with my friend Linda.  We did a fast 30 pace then a 2 minute normal walk.  I actually broke a sweat.  4 days into this change I believe I can do this for my health and well-being.  There is a picture of me walking around the track and one speaking to the guy at the desk.   It time to start thinking about getting different gym outfit....
